The Department of English at St.Francis College for Women (Intermediate section) has a dedicated, highly qualified and well-experienced faculty committed in contributing to the all round development of the student. The faculty handles both general English and Modern Language classes. Language skill training is an important focus area of the faculty, as good communication skills instils confidence in the students and makes them ready to face the world and take up challenging career options. The prescribed curriculum enhances the reading comprehension skills of the students. Learning by rote is discouraged and students are encouraged to independently think and express themselves. Classroom activities such as pictionary, word ladder and cross word puzzles are taken up to build their vocabulary and improve language skills in a stress free environment. The objectives of teaching English are achieved through various activities like poetry recitation, role play, script writing, oral drilling and enactment of lessons. Debates and group discussions are part of the class room activities conducted to hone their social interaction skills and provide a forum to form and express their views freely. The curriculum is used as a via media to impart moral values, mould their personality and groom the students with skills and confidence required to venture bravely into the world.

Modern language is a unique subject offered along with History and Civics as optionals, catering to the literature enthusiasts. The literature students are constantly encouraged and guided to improve their reading ability, comprehend various situations that take place during various periods. The campus library, caters to them with ample sources. The students are motivated to write book reviews by choosing a novel of their choice and are dissuaded from plagiarizing. This creates an opportunity to explore their imagination and present it innovatively, enabling them to think creatively which would improve their writing skills. The prescribed syllabus throws light on the lives of some classical writers and their respective genres, giving them a scope to develop a flair for the language and as well choose their careers. Students learn to appreciate critically. They also have an exposure to various adaptations of the curriculum that has historical plays and psychological thrillers. Apart from classroom sessions, their sensibilities are made acute by making them aware of the various sources available from the internet and the print media, enriching their ability to choose various career options.
